Schueberfouer

Schueberfouer

This year Luxembourg celebrates the 675th Schueberfouer and in grand style as usual. There are some new and exciting rides but not to worry, some of the old-time favorite rides have returned with long queues, lots of screaming and ear to ear smiles at the exit. Even though the weather wasn’t the most cooperative today, there were still lots of people up and down every aisle having a great time.

To better help those of us with food allergies be able to enjoy all aspects of Schueberfouer including the great smelling food; I made the rounds to the various restaurant cabins to see what I could find out and pass along. To my surprise and with great delight I am very happy to report that there is quite a bit for us to satisfy our culinary cravings. I had the pleasure of talking to many of the restaurant owners and staff about the need for gluten free and allergy free food, discussing what they each had to offer. To those at the Schueberfouer that I met today, you were incredibly kind, helpful and cooperative to allow me to photograph your restaurants and menus, a very big and heartfelt thank you!!

Before I go much further I want to give a disclaimer. The reason the restaurants look vacant is because I purposely went in the middle of the day, during the low time so I could talk to people in each establishment and not interrupt their patrons or the staff who work very hard. The proprietors were concerned about showing an empty restaurant and I wanted to assure them I would share a positively. I can assure the readers that these places are very popular and often packed. Also, I realize the allergen lists are not in English so I also wanted to assure you, dear friends, that I was able to find English speakers in each place who were very happy and helpful to interpret the menu and answer questions. As a back up, I have other articles dealing with translation of the gluten/allergy terms here and here.

empty tables

It would be hard to describe where each restaurant is located so my trusty side kick (aka: daughter) took pictures of the outside of each place to make it easier to locate. I’m going to show the exterior with the name of each place, the allergen key, a sample of the menu and interior so you know what to expect. I was advised by several of these places that reservations are a very good idea so when you arrive it might be good to set that first and then enjoy everything else.

As you can see there are quite a few places to enjoy the flavors of Schueberfouer 2015. I look forward to trying many of them myself since we still have a few weeks until end. I did try to ask about Gromperekiechelcher (aka: potato cakes) at some of the cabins but could not get a straight answer about actual ingredients. As for the mettwurst and other sausages, unless they specifically say gluten free then they are not. My experience has been that those sold in public venues are not gluten free.

I did not go to the candy and sweet treat cabins for food allergen disclaimers since I ran out of time and there are just too many of them but if it’s something you are looking forward to, then by all means please ask them. The majority of people try to help when they can even if they have to look it up or ask a colleague. I don’t think you will feel slighted in the least dear friends so enjoy and don’t forget to save the tasty meals until after the scary, fast and stomach turning rides.
